Nepal was hit by severe earthquakes in 2015. One of the consequences is that many people have lost access to their land. Having lost their documents, they cannot proof ownership. Considering that prior to the earthquakes 30% of all court cases in Nepal were related to land, this creates an additional set of problems.
The government has installed the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) to coordinate the activities for rebuilding the regions that were affected the most. NRA provides grants to inhabitants to rebuild their homes. To secure this tenure NRA needs an innovative approach that is simple, quick and result-oriented. This aligns with the Fit-For-Purpose Land Administration (FFP LA) principles.
This initiative is supported by the Dutch government. The project started in the beginning of 2017. This project is to be replicable in other regions in Nepal as well.
