EG-LAM 2026: from global guidance to local action
In May, the 6th meeting of the Expert Group on Land Administration and Management (EG-LAM) took place in Cape Town, South Africa. The meeting focused on translating global frameworks into practical approaches. These support countries that are strengthening their land administration systems.
Exchanging experiences from different regions
The meeting was co-chaired by Chile and the Netherlands. It brought together policy makers and land administration experts of UN Member States, international organizations, the academic community, professional bodies and private sector partners. These participants reviewed progress on the Framework for Effective Land Administration (FELA) and exchanged experiences from different regions.
Facing common challenges together
The participants discussed common challenges such as:
- governance of land administration systems
- interoperability of data
- sustainable financing for service delivery by the responsible institutions
- capacity development of involved stakeholders and experts
This discussion demonstrated the growing commitment of countries and partners to address these challenges together.
Building the Hub on Land Administration
In the end, a clear next step emerged: to support EG-LAM’s transition from global guidance to country-level implementation. To do this, a practical support mechanism will be explored further: the Hub on Land Administration. The Hub will play an important role in connecting existing knowledge about land administration frameworks and methods to operational land administration systems. This initiative will support countries through technical support, capacity development and knowledge exchange.
Looking even further ahead
This meeting reaffirmed EG-LAM’s goal to advance the UN’s agenda on land administration and management. And it created a valuable opportunity for the EG-LAM members to meet each other. Feedback collected during the meeting will help EG-LAM’s co-chairs focus on 3 main action points:
- Supporting countries by translating global frameworks and methods into operational land administration systems.
- Accelerating real impact in the field with the Hub on Land Administration.
- Further strengthening international cooperations.
