School for Land Administration Studies

The School for Land Administration Studies (SLAS) supports countries in strengthening their land administration systems through education, research, and professional development. It is a joint initiative by Kadaster and the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), University of Twente.

Expertise and experience

We combine academic expertise with practical experience. This makes SLAS uniquely positioned to deliver solutions that support sustainable development, poverty reduction, and good land governance. Governments and global institutions are looking for innovative, reliable land administration systems to tackle today’s challenges. Such as land tenure, legal security, and technological change. We can help with strong knowledge and capacity in both science and operations.

Our activities

  • Kadaster provides guest lectures for ITC’s Master’s programs.
  • ITC supports the training of Kadaster staff.
  • ITC students visit Kadaster annually to gain field experience.
  • Training for land professionals from low- and middle-income countries.
  • Focus on combining theory with practice and developing accessible knowledge tools.
  • Kadaster and ITC work together on consultancy projects worldwide and explore new opportunities to improve land administration.
  • ITC students complete internships and graduation projects at Kadaster.
  • Kadaster and ITC collaborate on long-term research (EngD, PhD, post-doc).
  • Jointly apply for funded projects and align research agendas.
  • A dedicated professor (to be appointed) connects ITC and Kadaster in the field of Land Administration.

Our history and mission

In 2006, the United Nations University (UNU) requested ITC to build capacities in the developing countries in the domain of land administration. We founded SLAS in 2006 through a partnership agreement between Kadaster and ITC. In 2023, this collaboration was renewed to continue supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through shared expertise. We aim to build land administration capacity in developing and emerging economies. Through supporting the creation of enabling institutional environments, networks, and change agents.
