Strengthening digital mapping in North Macedonia
A 3-day Expert Mission of the Technical Assistance and Information Exchange (TAIEX) program helped North Macedonia take the next step in modernising digital map production. Experts shared knowledge, strengthened cooperation and identified practical recommendations for future improvements.
Modernising digital map production
The mission’s aim was to provide technical assistance in strengthening and modernising digital topographic map production. We did this together with the Agency for Real Estate Cadastre (AREC) of North Macedonia. Discussions focused on aligning national practices with European Union standards and on incorporating the latest research and technological innovations. Participants also explored ways to enhance institutional capacity for the efficient production and dissemination of digital topographic maps. And how these can be tailored to the needs of a wide variety of users.
Working towards European standards
For the Republic of North Macedonia, the implementation of EU-compliant standards for the creation and continuous updating of national base maps is a strategic priority. The mission also focused on alignment with EU standards and best practices from our own experience.
Modern, efficient and user-friendly
Throughout the mission, experts and national stakeholders discussed both short- and long-term objectives for modern digital topographic mapping. Key themes included:
- production workflows
- data quality
- update cycles
- the future role of digital base maps in supporting public administration, spatial planning, and wider geospatial services
The event encouraged open discussion and knowledge sharing among all participants. Together, we identified clear and practical first steps towards a more modern, efficient, and user-friendly map production process in North Macedonia.
