2023 kick’s off with international workshop in Nepal
From 15 to 17 February Kadaster was present at the international workshop ‘Land Use Planning and Land Administration: Integration and Decentralisation’, in Dhulikhel, Kavrepalanchowk, Nepal.
The workshop brought together experts and practitioners from the fields of surveying, mapping, planning, and geo-information management to confirm the importance of integration between those domains.
Integration and decentralization
The theme of this workshop was 'Integration and decentralisation'. Integration does not only mean the technical connections. The workshop also focused on ensuring alignment of policy. And on the legal, organisational, financial and capacity building aspects. Without integration, the benefits of both land administration and land use planning are muted. It is always beneficial to push spatial planning decision making down to those most affected by those decisions. But a certain level of centralisation helps to enable national coordination and efficient use of public funds.
The Netherlands and Nepal share experiences with natural disasters
Being relatively small countries with high populations, the Netherlands and Nepal have much to share when it comes to land use planning and land administration. Nepal’s capital city Kathmandu struggles to secure the tenures of vulnerable groups and enforcing urban and rural planning controls. The consequences can be dire in cases of natural disaster, such as earthquakes. The Netherlands historically faced the challenges of rivers and sea-level management and its share of natural disasters. And therefore has developed inclusive governance systems to ensure livelihoods are protected responsibly. These synergies, lessons, and opportunities were unpacked.
Emerging talent
A special 1-day side-event, specifically targeted at university and vocation students and staff, ensured inclusion of emerging talent in Nepal. Their challenge will be to fully realise the country’s vision of integrated and effective land use planning.
